The objectives of the study were: (1) To develop Self-Instructional Materials (SIM) in a Package with reference to the necessary content to fill up the gaps in the updated knowledge of secondary school Biology teachers in their in-service learning. (2) To validate the developed package by ascertaining its effectiveness.
The sample consisted of 178 secondary school Biology teachers in Kerala selected by using purposive random sampling technique based on strata, such as, age, teaching experience of the subject, locale and management of schools.
The findings of the study were: (1) 37 percentage of teachers had achieved marks in the range of 61-80, 44 percentage of teachers achieved more than 80 percentage, and 19 percentage secured marks in the range of 54-60. None of them had secured below 50 marks. 81 percentages of teachers achieved more than 61 percentage marks. 2) The mean percentage score in the achievement test was 67. (3) 32.68 percentage error rate was committed by the 57 secondary level Biology teachers in the achievement test. The rate of achievement by the teachers was 67.32 percentages. (4) Analysis of aspects of organization of SIM and presentation of SIM are rated in range between 52-93 percentages and 39-98 percentages respectively. (5) The analysis of the aspects of mechanical makes up ranged between 66-100 percentages. (6) The aspects of the development of the audio component showed positive rating in the range between 63-100 percentages.
