The objectives of the study were: (1) To study the administrative patterns of the principals of secondary as well as higher secondary schools. (2) To study the correlation between the effectiveness of the principals and their personal variables like age, educational qualification and experience. (3) To study the correlation between the effectiveness of the principals and institutional variables, like, area, type, management, position, number of staff members, results, etc.
Null hypotheses were formulated for testing.
The sample consisted of 225 schools (110 from rural and 115 from urban area) of Ahmedabad District selected by Simple Random Sampling technique.
For data collection, the researcher developed a Self-perceived Test of Educational Administrative Pattern Effectiveness using Educational Administrative Style Diagnosis Test [EASDT] based on 3-D theory of administrative effectiveness designed by Prof. Reddin.
The study employed the survey method.
The data were tabulated pattern-wise and effectiveness - wise. Contingency co-efficient of correlation and chi-square were also calculated.
The major findings were: (1) The patterns of the Principals of urban and rural area were the same, i.e. Bureaucrat, Developer, Benevolent, Autocrat and Executive. (2) The correlations of the effectiveness of the principal with age, qualification, experience, separately were not significant. (3) The correlation of effectiveness of the principals with the area of the school, type of the school, position of the principal, number of staff members in school were found to be significant whereas the correlations of the effectiveness of the principals with level of the school, time of the school, type of the school management, and the scholastic achievement of the pupils in the public exam were found to be non significant. (4) In the rural area, 93 percent of the principals had the highest effectiveness and in the urban area, 77 percent of the principals had the highest effectiveness. (5) Style profile presentation reflected that all the principals were dominated and supported by the more effective patterns. The principals rejected less effective patterns.
