The objectives of this study were: (1) To estimate the Descriptive Statistics like Mean and Standard Deviations of all the select variables. (2) To test the significance of the main effect of each independent variable on achievement in Biology. (3) To test the significance of the interaction effect of creativity with each other independent variables on Achievement in Biology. (4) To estimate the extent of relation of each independent variable with achievement in Biology. (5a) To identify the significant predictor variables in predicting achievement in Biology. (5b) To estimate R the multiple correlation between the criterion (dependent) variable and the significant predictor variables in predicting achievement in Biology. (5c) To estimate the relative efficiency of the significant predictors in predicting achievement in Biology
The study was carried out on a stratified sample of 640 Secondary School Pupils (311 boys, 329 girls) belonging to 14 schools of Ernakulam district of Kerala.
The tools used were: Achievement test in Biology for standard IX by Jose; A comprehensive test of Creativity by Sumangala; The Kerala University Group Test of Intelligence by Nair, et al.; Letter Matrices test of intelligence by Nair; Kerala University Science Aptitude Test by Pillai, et al.;Kerala Scale of Achievement Motivation by Nair; Scale of Self-Concept;Scale of Attitude towards Science; and Scale of Attitude towards Problem Solving by Pillai.
Descriptive survey method was adopted for the study.
The data were analyzed with the help of Two way (3x3) Analysis of Variance; t-test for large independent samples (for follow up tests of ANOVA); Pearson s Product Moment Correlation, Fisher’s test of significance of r; Percentage variance r2 x100; Regression by ANOVA approach; and Multiple Correlation.
The findings were: (1) Out of the eight independent variables, 7 variables viz, Creativity, Verbal Intelligence, Non-Verbal Intelligence, Science Aptitude, Achievement Motivation, Attitude towards Science and Attitude towards Problem Solving have significant main effect on achievement in Biology. (2) Interaction effect on achievement in Biology is significant only in the case of Creativity with Attitude towards science (all other studied interaction effects of Creativity are not significant). (3) All the eight independent variables have significant positive relation with achievement in Biology. (4) All independent variables except the variable Achievement Motivation can be used as significant predictors for predicting achievement in Biology. (5) The Multiple R s at each step are significant at 0.01 level. (6) The study revealed that the variable Achievement Motivation has significant effect on achievement in Biology. But it is not significant predictor while Self-Concept, a low related variable with achievement in Biology, was found to be a significant predictor. (7) Among the select Cognitive and Affective predictor variables, Cognitive variables stand high in predicting achievement in Biology when compared to the Affective variables studied.
