The objectives of study were: (1) To prepare and produce a comprehensive video program for imparting education on etiology of anemia and its prevention, treatment and control. Also to compose and record the educational songs in same time on the tunes of same. (2) To determine the impact of intervention on anemia in target population (adolescent girls) through: Supplementation of iron folate tablets, nutrition education through video and through nutrition education by folk songs and video program in combination with iron folate supplementation. (3) To compare the relative effectiveness of above mentioned strategies to control the anemia among target population group. (4) To assess whether or not varied climatic and cropping systems have relation with nutrition status of target group population specifically in the context of anemia.
The cluster sampling has been found suitable, as in this type of sampling the groups are selected randomly and not the individuals. The sample size includes 120 girls of 13-18 years age in each village.The subjects of present study were basically illiterates.
For the collection of data two different schedules were prepared, namely, primary survey schedule and pre and post knowledge test schedule. After identification of sample, their Hemoglobin was tested.
The experimental method of research was followed. Pretest for knowledge was taken by asking individually the questions set in the schedule to each girl of four villages. After that subgroups were made of 40-40-40 according to experimental design. The folk song sessions were followed by question-answer sessions similar to that of video education program.In each village the 120 girls were asked to assemble at a specified place where the medical doctor explained anemia consequences and ways to prevent and treat it. Girls were shown charts and poster. Iron folate tablets were given for 3 months with instructions to take one tablet per day after meals. After 3 months, the post knowledge test was accomplished by using same schedule which was used for pre-knowledge test.
Computation included descriptive statistics, frequency distribution, t-test for significance between pre and post intervention on hemoglobin level and knowledge gained and analysis of variance for testing the impact of intervention on individual package – TWFF, BKM was used for testing some hypothesis.
The findings of study were: If nutrition education is combined with medical interventions, the target population become more receptive which in turn facilitate adequate follow up of interventions. (2) When information about anemia other than through video or folk songs along with iron folate supplementation was imparted the participants in arid and as well as semi arid zone were benefited most both in terms of hemoglobin level improvement and gain in knowledge an anemia. (3) In large-scale rural development programs, poverty alleviation program and nutritional supplementation program should be made an essential component.
