The objectives of the study were: (1) To develop educational intervention package on HNE component of ICDS progamme for promoting Cognitive Learning of AWWs through Personal and Impersonal Modes of intervention. (2) To Tests and measure the effectiveness of educational intervention package for promotion of Cognitive Learning of AWWs through two instructional modes.
The tools used comprised of two modules, namely, nutrition during pregnancy and lactation, and child s morbidity, mortality and remedies, lessons in capsule form, three types of instructional material covering booklets, flash cards and video films and a battery of ten cognition tests.
The Personal mode included lecture presentation while the Impersonal mode was implemented through video films.
The statistical techniques used were mean, percentages, Standard Deviation, t - Test, paired t - Test, rank, coefficient of variation, Kendall s coefficient of concordance and Friedman two way ANOVA by ranks.
The major findings of the study were: (1) The precognition scores of AWWs with respect to all the capsules of two modules on health and nutrition components was low in both the experimental groups. (2) The precognition scores with respect to Knowledge, Comprehension, Application and Total Cognition were widely dispersed before the intervention for all the capsules. (3) The mode-wise effectiveness did not indicate significant variation in promoting Cognitive Learning. However, Personal Mode retained the top rank followed by Impersonal Mode. Thus, suggesting that while Anganwadi training centers may continue using Personal Mode but they may also explore the possibility of use of Impersonal Mode for training of AWWs. (4) The gain of Knowledge, Comprehension and Application (KCA) for all the ten capsules were statistically significant. (5) The hierarchical pattern of Cognitive Learning revealed that Knowledge obtained the top rank followed by Comprehension and then Application. Thereby, directing that existing Cognitive Structure affected learning capacity in order of K<C<A which commensurate with Bloom s taxonomy of educational objectives.
